Monterrey, Mexico, May 19th, 2020.–PetStar, the largest food grade PET recycling facility in the world, which is led by Arca Continental and members of the Coca-Cola Mexican Industry (IMCC in Spanish), made a virtual presentation of its 2019 Sustainability Report in the framework of the company’s 25th Anniversary.

The document outlines the scope of its initiatives, the certifications obtained in the course of the year, and other accomplishments of the company in 2019. Likewise, it showcases its environmental stewardship as reflected in the following achievements:

  • -Collecting and recycling more than 84,000 tons of bottles
  • -Producing 52,000 tons of food grade recycled resin to be included in new bottles with recycled content
  • -Preventing 108,000 tons of CO2 emissions because the company is no longer using virgin resin
  • -Employing 63% of energy from clean sources
  • -Creating 1,183 direct jobs and more than 25,000 indirect jobs

Also noteworthy is the fact that in early 2020 the company was granted the Ibero-American Award for Quality, Gold Level, for quality and innovation in its processes, in addition to the Cradle to Cradle certification, recognizing its food grade PET recycled resin as the first in the world to comply with the five categories that endorse it as a 100% circular product. The company also adheres to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment and the National Agreement for the New Plastics Economy signed by the Mexican Senate.

Recently, in collaboration with the IMCC, the company announced it had delivered more than 200 thousand recycled PET face shields—produced with more than one million donated bottles—for personnel working in the hospitals that are treating Covid-19.

PetStar’s operations, which are led by Arca Continental, Coca-Cola de México, and several bottlers in the IMCC, constitute the global benchmark in waste management and are pillars of The Coca-Cola Company’s recycling strategy to achieve a #WorldWithoutWaste.
